Additional Attic Insulation Can Be A Cost-Effective Means Of Reducing Energy CostsThere’s no disputing the fact that heat rises, and with winter approaching, all that heat you put into your home goes up to the ceiling. If you have insufficient attic insulation, you’re going to be losing energy dollars through your roof. Adding more insulation to the attic is one of the most cost-effective approaches to making your home more energy efficient, which keeps it comfortable throughout the year.

The climate in Fayetteville requires winter heating and summer air conditioning. The Department of Energy estimates that almost half of all your energy consumption throughout the year goes for heating and cooling. By installing adequate amounts of insulation in the attic or roof, you cut the summer heat gain and winter heat loss, lowering your bills.

Unlike other projects to reduce your energy consumption, adding attic insulation is cost effective and easy to do. You may even be able to do the work yourself, saving even more money. The first step of the project is to determine how much insulation you have in the attic already. If you live in an older home, it’s likely that you’ll need some.

Insulation that is level with the joists may be inadequate. The Department of Energy recommends total R-values for attics of existing homes sit between R-25 and R-38 for the Fayetteville area. Rather than measuring the insulation by depth, a better indicator is how effective it is. If you’re unsure of how to make this determination, speak to one of our trained technicians.

The choices you have for attic insulation include batt or blanket, blown-in, or rigid insulation. Although the rigid foam panels cost more than blanket or blown products, the R-values are higher per inch of thickness. The panels sit between the joists, as does blanket insulation. Blowing in the insulation requires a special blower, and should be handled by a professional.
