Dual Fuel/Hybrid Systems Offer An Efficient, Green Heating Solution In Fayetteville's Mild Winters

If you’re looking for a green heating solution, consider a dual fuel system. These combine the energy efficiency of a heat pump with a fuel-burning furnace. They’re an energy efficient solution for heating because they only use fuel when the weather falls into the low 30s and below. A heat pump can create three watts of heat from each watt of electricity that it uses.

Heat pumps move heat from one place to another. In the winter, they take the heat from the air to warm your home. In the summer, the pump reverses the process and takes the heat from your home and loses it outdoors. Depending on the HSPF (heating season performance factor), these systems work well until there’s less heat to harvest. Heat pumps with higher HSPF ratings can provide sufficient heat even when the temperatures are in the 20s. With a dual fuel or hybrid system, the system switches from heating with air to heating with fuel.

These offer a green heating solution because you’re using less gas, which is a finite natural resource. During the milder days of fall and spring and during warmer weather in the winter, you can rely on the heat pump to produce enough heat for your home, using fuel only when temperatures cool significantly.

When the dual fuel system is installed, the HVAC contractor adjusts the thermostat to tell the system when to switch from heating with the heat pump to heating with fuel. When the weather reaches the specified temperature or balance point, the gas furnace automatically kicks in and the heat pump shuts off.

Investing in a hybrid system makes sense because the heat pump can cool your home in the summer as efficiently as any central air conditioner with the same energy efficiency rating and it assures you that regardless of temperatures outside in the winter, your home will be comfortably warm.
