Choosing the Right-Sized Air Conditioner

One potential mistake is buying an air conditioner that’s too big (or too small) for your home. If it’s too big, it likely will cost more to operate and will have trouble removing moisture from your home, since it doesn’t stay on long enough. A system that’s too small, on the other hand, will have to work too hard to cool your home, and won’t do it efficiently. In that case, you’ll also end up with higher electric bills.

Selecting an air conditioning system that’s the correct size is critical. The size of your system will determine its ability to cool your home through its life, and also could affect how well it removes moisture. So, before you buy any new equipment, take the time to choose a contractor who will give you a professional evaluation of your home.

When you call Blanton's, we'll consider the following elements when helping you select the right AC:

  • Climate: The climate you live in should be considered. If it isn’t, your new system could run less effectively than it needs to.
  • Home Size: The size of your home is a huge factor in correctly sizing your air conditioner.
  • Insulation: The amount of insulation, its R-Value, and the amount of air that leaks from your ducts needs to be figured out.
  • Windows: The location and type of windows is a big factor when sizing a home for the correct air conditioning system.
  • House Members: The number of people in your home will affect how often your new air conditioner is used. The more occupants, the more your equipment will be on, and vice versa.
  • Preferences: You may like your home to be a certain temperature. Your preferred comfort is one of the most important factors.
  • Lights: The lights in your home produce heat, so they need to be considered.

Why SEER Matters When Upgrading Air Conditioning Systems

Before you make your decision to upgrade your air conditioner, you should understand how a system’s SEER works.

The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) assigned to air conditioning systems tells you how adequately they can keep your home cool. The higher the SEER is, the better it will be able to produce cold air. The Department of Energy mandates that any new air conditioning systems must have a SEER of 14 or higher.

Often, the best air conditioners on the market have a SEER somewhere in the range of 16-23. The Energy Star program states that air conditioning systems that fall in this range are, in fact, 14 percent more energy-efficient than ordinary units. By upgrading to a new high-efficiency air conditioner, you can lower the energy usage in your home by as much as 30-40 percent.

Air conditioning systems with a high SEER provide one of the best ways currently available to produce cool temperatures in your home during the hot summer months. While they are most likely more expensive than ordinary air conditioners, their efficiency in consuming energy will help you reduce your utility bills significantly. Just a few years after the purchase of a high-efficiency air conditioner, the money you will have saved through energy savings will go a long way toward making up the AC system’s cost.

Replacing vs. Repairing Your AC

Like all technology, air conditioning systems continue to update and become increasingly more efficient, while existing systems tend to need continual servicing as they age. All homeowners try to strike a balance between getting an old air conditioning unit repaired by professionals and getting the whole thing replaced. If you’re in this position, here are some criteria to keep in mind when making the best decision for your home:

  • Age of the system. Technology is rapidly improving, especially when it comes to energy efficiency. Units that are just eight to ten years old may use up to twice the electricity of a new unit. If the machine is getting close to the decade-old mark, it is probably worth replacing the air conditioner, as the savings in electricity should quickly help make up for the extra expense.

  • Check the rest of the system. Sometimes problems such as poorly constructed ducts or a poorly insulated house can make the air conditioner work extremely hard without making the house feeling particularly comfortable. If you can get your ducts patched or add insulation throughout the house, you may be able to salvage your air conditioner. If it does not have to work as hard, it may be able to last a few more years, while still keeping your home quite comfortable.

  • Coverage and cost. In general, if a unit is going to cost 50% or more of its value to repair, it makes more financial sense to just replace it. As the unit ages, it is only going to cost more for maintenance and repair, so it is worth at least getting the savings on the energy bill. However, some homeowners are members of preventative maintenance programs, such as Blanton’s Comfort Club. These programs often include repairs and maintenance for lower costs than normal, which means that you could delay replacing your unit.

  • Overall reliability. If a unit typically works well, keeping the home comfortable, the bills are not outrageous, and it rarely requires servicing outside the recommended 1-2 annual checkups, then a one-time repair may be worth the investment. Conversely, a unit that requires regular repairs and is becoming a money drain should probably be replaced.
