Considering A Dual-Fuel System? Four Considerations
Here in the Fayetteville area, we can get the extremes of both winter and summer seasons. Summer temperatures can soar into the 90s and beyond, while winter blasts can produce freezing temperatures similar to those in New England. Keeping our homes both cool and warm while staying within a reasonable energy budget is tricky.
Dual-Fuel Systems
The introduction of a dual-fuel system is a great way to stay ahead of rising fuel costs. The idea is to use the efficiency of a heat pump for summer air conditioning, and for heat in moderately cold temperatures. Below a set temperature, the furnace automatically turns on and provides your home’s heat. As the thermometer rises, the heat pump takes over again.
Is Dual-Fuel Right For You?
Modern heat pumps are more energy efficient than ever. Their ability to provide heat, however, is limited when temperatures plunge. That’s where the furnace takes over. Furnace fuel is saved for only those times when it’s truly needed. This system is proven to reduce energy costs by hundreds of dollars annually. Still, there are some things to consider before investing in a dual-fuel system:
- Sizing: Have your system “sized” to meet your home’s heating and cooling needs. Most homes have existing equipment that is larger than they need.
- Efficiency Ratings: The higher the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF), the higher cost of the heat pump. However, higher-efficiency systems provide a faster payback in energy savings.
- Cost Analysis: Your heating contractor can perform an analysis based on fuel and electricity costs. This can show your potential payback and savings.
- Compatibility: A dual-fuel heat pump may not work with your existing furnace if it is an older model. Check to see if your furnace will work. Otherwise, there will be a higher investment for a new furnace.
