How To Cover or Hide Your Outdoor AC Unit
Once the weather starts heating up in Fayetteville and the Triangle area, your home’s air conditioner is your best friend. However, you might not like how this friend affects your home’s curb appeal or yard appeal. The good news is that there are ways to minimize the appearance of your AC equipment. Here are several ways that our HVAC experts at Blanton’s recommend for safely covering or hiding your AC unit without causing damage.
Create an Air Conditioner Enclosure
Wanting to hide an outdoor AC unit is common for many homeowners. It is possible to purchase panels that are specifically designed for this purpose. Some use stakes that you simply hammer into the ground to support the panels, often made from PVC plastic, wood, or metal. It is important to remember to leave enough space around the unit to maintain proper ventilation; otherwise, you can cause your unit to overheat.
Plant Bushes Around Your Air Conditioner
Planting large plants or bushes around your AC unit can help hide it by creating a visual barrier. The dense foliage helps conceal the unit. This is an attractive option, but you need to do a little research to choose a variety that doesn’t have invasive roots that can grow under the air conditioner’s concrete pad. You also need to keep the bushes trimmed away from the unit and their height barely above the unit to maintain access to allow for routine AC maintenance.
Grow a Wall of Vines
By installing a wooden or iron trellis near your AC unit, you can block it from view by using trailing vines, like ivies, clematis, and other plants, that can grow vertically. If you are not using fully grown plants, it could take a few months to achieve the full effect. When watering your new garden element, remember to check the vines to ensure they are not too close to your AC unit. Also, leave plenty of room to allow a service service professional to get to the unit for maintenance and repair purposes.
Build a Decorative Brick Wall
As long as you leave plenty of room to allow for air circulation and access to your AC unit, you can also use bricks or stones to build a decorative wall. This type of wall is low maintenance and will last for a long time. You can enhance the appeal of your wall by placing potted plants on top of the wall or painting bricks or stones.
