Water, water, everywhere… do you know where your water supply comes from? And just as important: Do you have a home water filtration system? Do you need one?
Some homes are supplied by well water, which means there’s a well on the property that feeds into the home water system. (Thankfully, you don’t have to pull up water from a bucket, as in “the olden days.”) Other homes are supplied by city water, and others still receive their water directly from nearby water sources, such as lakes.
Whichever water source you have, it’s a smart investment in your health and wellness to install a residential water filtration system. But there are so many options! Which is best? Do you really need all of the bells and whistles? In this article, we’ll discuss the common types of filtration systems, and identify the “must haves” for long-lasting units.
There are seemingly countless varieties of water filtering systems on the market; how do you know which is best? Here’s a brief overview of the types you’ll likely encounter when shopping for your own. There are many more, including hybrid models and variations on the types listed. At their most basic, these units trap physical particles, such as dust and silt. They don’t filter out microscopic contaminants, like chemicals, and are commonly used in combination with another filter.
These high-tech filters remove harmful bacteria from the water using powerful UV light — no chemicals are involved.
Highly scientific, these units use a semi-permeable membrane to trap harmful contaminants. They do run slower, on average, than other systems.
If your water supply comes from your city or municipality, it has likely been treated with chlorine. This is helpful to remove any contaminants, but it’s not something you want to drink, or bathe in. Many homeowners find the smell of chlorinated water off-putting, too. Chlorine water filters remove the chlorine, while keeping the water safe and potable.
Charcoal or activated carbon removes chlorine from the water in these filters.
These water filters are great for homes with old pipes, as the filters remove heavy metal sediment (rust) from the water.
Easy enough to understand, these filters are attached directly to the tap, and filter water as it is distributed through the faucet.
These are increasingly common, because they treat the water as it enters your home (the point of entry, or POE), rather than at the point of distribution. This means that wherever you need water, such as the kitchen and bathroom sink, it has been filtered and is safe for your consumption and use.
It is important to note that whole house water filters come in a variety of different options, based on the categories listed above. There are chlorine whole house filters, ultraviolet whole house filters, and so on.
With so many options available, there is a wide variety of quality when it comes to filtration systems.
More than ever, maintaining good health is paramount. With so many potential pathogens and health hazards, your drinking water should not be one of them. Be sure that your home water filtration system is up for the task of keeping you and your family well (and hydrated!).
