5 Signs That Your A/C System Is in Its Death Throes
When you need to replace your central air conditioning unit, it’s rarely a complete surprise. There are usually signs that point to the fact that your A/C is nearing the end of its useful life. If any of the following is happening, it may be time to start pricing replacement A/C units:
1. The Unit Is Over 10 Years Old
Every appliance in the home has an expected lifespan. Consumer Reports says that, for a central A/C unit, that time is 15 years. But even if they still work, air conditioners still get less efficient as they age. According to Energy.gov, an air conditioner that is 10 years old could be consuming 20 to 40 percent more electricity as a newer model for the same results.
2. Your Power Bills Are Going Up
Has your power bill gotten more and more expensive every summer? If so, it could point to a unit that is not working as well as it has in the past. Your power company should have comparison tools that make it easy to see when your power consumption increases.
3. It Seems to Run for Longer Than It Used
Air conditioners cycle on an off throughout the day as your home reaches your target temperature. If you hear your A/C unit running for much longer than it used to, this can be a sign that it is not working efficiently. And, as a rule, the longer your air conditioner runs, the higher your power bill will be.
4. Your Home is Not As Cool As In the Past
When your air conditioner is getting old, you may find that you don’t feel as cool and comfortable as you have in past years. You may also notice that your home seems more humid than it had in past years. Both of these are signs of an aging (and potentially failing) system.
5. It Needs to Be Repaired Often
The price of air conditioning repairs can add up quickly. If you are starting to wonder whether the expensive HVAC appointments are costing more than your unit is worth, ask one of our technicians to assess the other parts of your unit. If many parts look like they will wear out or break in the near future, you can save money in the long run by choosing to replace instead of repair.
