Cold Temperatures Are Coming, So Act Now To Save Energy Later

The season of mittens, scarves, hot cocoa and nights by the fire is soon approaching. While it’s certainly a time of the year that’s often associated with fond memories, it’s also a time of year when most people’s energy bills go up. The good news is that there are several things you can do to maximize your home’s energy-saving potential before the chill of winter arrives. Doing so can reduce your monthly expenses and is better for the environment.

Air sealing to save energy

One of the most important things you can do to optimize your energy usage is air sealing your home. Having a well-sealed home stops the heated air from inside from escaping to the outside. It’s a cost-effective way to save energy that can increase your indoor comfort level as well. Additionally, when there are issues with moisture in a home, air leakage adds to the problem. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, moisture issues can damage a home’s structure and negatively impact the health of those living in it. When air is leaking from a home, weatherstripping and caulking are commonly used to remedy the problem.

Save energy with adequate insulation

Having a properly insulated home is another way you can significantly reduce your energy bills. There are many areas in a home that can use the protective shield that’s provided by insulation. This helps to lock in the air that’s been heated or cooled. You can also insulate your hot water heater and your pipes.

Other ways to prepare for winter and save energy

  • Make sure your furnace filter is clean and the pilot light is working.
  • Furnaces that are more than 15 years old may need to be replaced.
  • Clean your gutters and ridge vents.
  • Test carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms.
  • Have your chimney checked for debris and animals before starting a fire.
