The liquid leaking from your furnace is usually water, which your system removed from the air while cooling. Whether the issue can be resolved by you, the homeowner, or if it requires a call to Blanton’s can be determined by the location of the leak itself.
So, where is the leak?
Water leaking from under your furnace is most often due to a clogged line. The clog is formed by the accumulation of muck in the line or pan over time. This will happen to every system occasionally. Fortunately, most homeowners can resolve this issue simply and economically.
First, remove the pan and make sure it is clean and dry. Then, using a wet/dry vacuum, suck the PVC drainpipe and line clean. If the system and pan are very dirty, you may also want to remove the covers and vacuum there as well. Make sure the filter is clean. These steps should take care of the problem. Keep in mind: If you have not had an annual HVAC service, call Blanton’s to schedule one, so that we might rule out any issues with the humidifier.
If this does not solve the issue, check to see if there is a hole in the coil drain pan; if so, it will need to be replaced. Also, look for grease or oil on the coil — clean the coil with soap if needed.
The coil or drain may be completely clogged. If vacuuming doesn’t help, call a professional furnace repair service professional. If your air conditioning unit is operational and shares an internal drain with the furnace, the leak could be caused by an internal drain system plug and may require more than simple suctioning.
When the unit freezes up and causes an overflow, replace the filter. Then find out if the coil needs to be cleaned of residue. Finally, check the Freon levels to make sure there are no leaks. If this does not correct the issue, contact Blanton’s.
If the system is leaking at the intake vent, it usually means wicking from another source or improperly insulated piping. Either case means a professional should be called.
